Guardians of our Salish Estuaries (GooSE) delivers science-based estuary habitat restoration and humane Canada Goose mitigation throughout the Salish Sea of coastal British Columbia.
Our members combine decades of wildlife biology expertise with Indigenous ecological knowledge to conserve and restore estuarine marshes to benefit a wide range of fish and wildlife, especially salmonids.

Pioneering Eco-Cultural Restoration
Founded by coastal biologists, we bridge Western science and Indigenous wisdom to protect vulnerable estuary marshes. Inspired by traditional First Nations fish weir designs, GooSE designed eco-cultural fencing made of biodegradable alder and willow that excludes Canada Geese and allows native vegetation to be restored through transplants or natural regeneration.

Habitats
Canada Geese forage by grazing estuary vegetation during the growing seasons and grubbing rhizomes in the mud during the winter, Grazing removes considerable nutrients from the system and removes plants that provide shade and cover for juvenile salmon in the estuary channels. Grubbing removes soils and accelerates erosion of marsh platforms which transforms an estuary marsh from lush green sedge beds to lifeless gravel bars.
Our field teams rebuild damaged estuarine marshes through direct planting of sedges and by erecting protective exclosures.
